joe o'neil, we miss you

Joe O'Neil, the fantastic man who believed so strongly in Ridinghood and had been representing us this year passed away today. We are devastated, Joe really "got" us and made us feel that we could achieve anything. We will miss him so much. In an industry of non-professionals, Joe always understood and appreciated great songmanship, it was refreshing to work with someone who had such a depth of musical knowledge, amazing experience and a great acumen for music business. We were truly blessed that Joe laid down his roots in Wales and the Welsh music industry will be a poorer place without him. There will be a celebration of his life details of which have yet to be announced. We will post any news here as soon as we know something. We would like to send our love and condolences to his family and friends.

After narrowly missing out on getting on the Orange's Unsigned Act TV show we were personally invited to audition for Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley for the show last Saturday. I have tried to ignore the blazing dig "Unsigned" as though we free artists are lesser in some way and the patronising listen to "my demo" link icon (us independent artists are making real records now don't you know?!) but I couldn't be fooled by the cheap-trick X-Factor invitation, what am I, a puppet?! Anyway they were obviously so incensed by us not turning up for said esteemed audition that they forthwith removed our sweet little promo video for our single Ransom UK - apparently it is "inappropriate" and too "offensive" for CHANNEL 4?! Radio 1?! What?! Here it is, are they mad?

Rhiannon posed as a modern Venus in a series of shots for Sarah. Sarah then later painted Rhiannon as Venus on Canvas which can be seen as part of her exhibition at Pontypool College.

The Triple Muse

Besides being the singer of Ridinghood, Rhiannon is a Welsh mythological character. She is a moon goddess, muse to the poets.

Robert Graves calls her the White Goddess, but concedes that on account of her identity as Triple Muse she might also be the Red or the Black Goddess. White corresponds with Virgin or Life, Red with Woman or Sex, Black with Hag or Death.

In Welsh Mythology, the birds of Rhiannon are harbingers of death. Upon hearing their song on the battlefield, a warrior knew death was imminent.

The Triple Muse inspires the poets, but at a high price: they pay for her patronage with their lives.

She appears in many forms and can take on multiple identities.

One day Rhi and I found ourselves in the stomach-wrenching position of having to shop in one of those blood-curdlingly generic malls. Having survived the suicide-inducing effects of the real world we had a sudden urge to get out of the town and drive into the pretty wooded hills overlooking Talbot Green shopping centre. Neither of us knew where we were going or why but we ended up outside The Cross Keys Hotel in Llantrisant, a sign outside enblazened with the words "LIVE MUSIC HERE EVERY SATURDAY". Always prepared Rhi jumped out of the car and thrust a Ridinghood CD into the hands of the wonderful landlady, Lisa. She listened to the CD that night and booked us the next day. Tomorrow we return, just the two of us, to rock you in ways that would make Tenacious D proud.

GREAT NIGHT AT THE SIX IN HAND

We played a blinder last night and had the best time. We had the usual Rock 'n Roll complaint from the neighbours about the noise...after one song! We even got the regulars up dancing - a never before seen event apparently?! We made some fabulous new fans - Jess & Mel: I want you singing along to all the lyrics by next time :)

A big thank you to the Ponty crowd for their wonderful support, Huw we missed you though, where were you dude? Tom was well happy he's asked us back on July the 12th and we even scored two more bookings: a beer festival May Bank Holiday Weekend at the Open Hearth in Pontypool courtesy of Cheryl and the irrepressible Nathan offered us centre stage at the World Heritage Site Summer Festival in Blaenavon.

Our Rhiannon virtually hails from Cwmbran - the Valley of the Crows. As the name Rhiannon is linked in Welsh mythology to the Raven, I was not in the least bit surprised to discover that the comic strip adventurer, Rachel Roth is the alias of Superhero - the Raven....RR....Hello?!

We've never played Cwmbran before so this is quite an exciting gig for us seeing as Rhi is just from the next town over. The venue is the Six In Hand, Tom is the landlord. You can call him and tell him how lovely he is for booking us to play there on 01633860569.

We had an fantastic gig at the Pentre. Rhiannon & I received amazing backing from the brilliant Chris Jones on drums & the awesome Darshan Ishaya on bass - guys you totally rocked! A big thank you to Mike & Brad and everyone who makes our gigs in Llangrannog so great. We can't wait to get back to you! 1st August is the next show.
